“Whether painting or working in ceramics, I often work in series, creating a dialogue between pieces through color, composition, and texture. Filtering my emotional and visual experiences—both conscious and unconscious—my process is intuitive, spontaneous, and experimental, quietly reflecting, revisiting, and reshaping until I reach that final YES!”
Helen Werngren is an abstract painter and ceramic artist born and raised in Sweden. She made the United States her home in the mid-1990s, eventually settling in California after living and working in Colorado and on the East Coast. Her work is held in national and international collections.
Working from Studio 126 on the first floor of the ICB ART building in Sausalito, Helen shares her days with her loyal studio companion Albert, her big personality dog.
Helen's paintings and monotypes are playful, intuitive explorations—spirited responses to the world around her, guided by curiosity and emotion.
In her ceramic practice, Helen hand-builds sculptural vessels with organic, evolving forms. Many pieces carry a deeply personal lineage: she incorporates delicate crochet patterns made by her grandmother. These works bridge generations, blending memory, touch, and material into quietly powerful objects.
